Updated: Jun 11, 2020

Things you will need.

- mixed berries

- water

- Rubber bands

- Gloves

- Salt

- White/cream coloured Garments which are light enough to show dye colours

CREATING THE FIXATE

1 Combine a large pot with salt and water. Approximately, its1 cup of salt to 8 cupsof water. Continue the ratio of1:8until the garments are fully covered in the water.

2 Bring mixture to boil

3 Place garments in the pot and let them simmer for approximately an hour. This creates a fixate, which helps the clothing to soak up the dye.

4. Take clothing out of the pot and put it to the side. Do not let it dry.

CREATING THE DYE.

4. Fill up a saucepan with water and berries. Use 1 cup of berries to every 2 cups(1:2 ratio) of water, until the pot is filled high enough to immerse the garments.

5. Allow the berry mixture to come to a boil

6. While the berry mixture is heating up, twist the garment fabrics and tie them off with rubber bands. This creates the ‘tie-dye’ effect.

4. Once the berry mixture has come to a boil, bring down the heat to a simmer.

5. Put in the garments you with to dye. The longer you immerse them in the solution, the pigmented the end result will be. Leave the clothing in the heated solution for approximately 20 minutes-30.

Remember: the dye appears darker at first but will fade after its first washes.

6. Turn the stovetop after 30 minutes and allow the water to cool. You can leave the garments in the solution overnight, or for as long as you would like.

7. Putting on gloves to avoid staining your hands, take off the rubber bands and hang on the line to dry.

Prior to wearing, wash the clothing to avoid it staining other garments/your skin.
