Think you are doing the right deed by donating clothes to charity shops? I would re-think that idea
Of recently I watched a documentary episode from Compass on the ABC. Let me tell you I learnt some interesting information on how...
Fashion + Politics + Ethical + Sustainable
Fashion is often used in political campaigns to activist movements. Clothing can be used to highlight issues, as a signpost for our view on an issue or as a form of engagement with culture. The way we dress could also be used to suggest authority, moral value, wealth and status. Fashion can maintain and deepen inequality, but it also has the potential to challenge power and highlight inequality or alternative viewpoints. What one wears, how one wears it and when one wears it constitutes expressions of degrees of social freedoms and influences.
Ethical Fashion seeks to create non-exploitative working conditions. This means paying the workers a good wage and creating an appreciative, non-discriminative, safe and hygienic environment. It is about designing and manufacturing clothes in a way that cares for people and communities, making sure of fair treatment from cotton seed to the finished garment.
Sustainable fashion is focused on the environment. It is about ensuring that the industry does not contribute to environmental degradation. Specifically, this means the way textiles are made, the materials used, the quality standards applied, upcycled/ recycled materials, and any packaging or branding. It is also focusing on energy-saving initiatives, treatment of wastewater, microplastics and pollutants and offset any environmental damage.
